This is a beautiful bronze or sahari Japanese ladle stand (shakutate), a utensil used in the tea ceremony. It is 6 3/4" (17.2cm) high and 3 1/4" (8.3cm) wide with an archaic looking design on three sides. Because the metal has a lovely ring to it, I suspect it is sahari, a traditional mix of copper, tin, lead and silver - a metal also used for gongs. The piece has seen much use and has rubs, tiny scratches, a couple small dings and a shallow dent in the side. This would also make a lovely vase if the bottom were sealed, as there are three tiny pinholes, either from age or the original casting.
