This is a very rare Vintage National Bank Of Australasia Cheque for Australian Pounds £100 6 April 1938 Naracoorte. This parchment cheque, with a face value of 100 Australian pounds, is a rare piece of Australian history. This cheque is a great addition to any collection of Australian coins and notes, especially for those interested in the history of Australia's banking system. It is a unique piece of memorabilia that showcases the artistry and design of early 20th-century Australian money and currency.
This cheque was made out to my grandfather, T A Witford (Trafalgar Angus Witford) who was a pacificist yet served his country in the Australian Imperial Force Army Medical Corps (AMC) in WWI between 3 Sep 1917 and 14 August 1919 both in South Australia and overseas in the European Theatre of conflict where he spent a total of 711 service in the AMC of which 421 were spent overseas.
The cheque was signed by W J Johnson, seemingly a racehorse owner in 1938 from some newspaper articles I found online. For some reason, my grandfather never banked the cheque and I ended up inheriting it via my mother, his daughter. Of course, as they told me, the successor bank, the NAB, will not honour this cheque as it is more than 6 months old.
Note that these original pics are very high res so you can see all the detail. Because of this, I have put a small watermark near the top of each pic for the sake of security. Note that this watermark is NOT on the original cheque that you will get if you are the successful bidder.
Condition
Used - very old. Still very legible and can read the fine pink background pattern and well as the items penned in black ink. Note from the pics that the cheque has a small hole in the middle of it and some small brown spots on the back that have seeped through to the front. My grandfather was a baker and greengrocer in Naracoorte South Australia. Otherwise in very good nick and these small imperfections show character and the fact that it is a genuine article.
